Safety Tips For Driving an RV at Night

Generally speaking, if you’re traveling by RV, you’ll want to avoid driving at night as much as possible. It’s dark and hard to see, and you’ll be more likely to be tired, which can be dangerous.

However, sometimes, it’s going to be necessary to drive at night, either because your chosen campsite is full, you were delayed by weather, you have a set time you need to be somewhere for an event, or it’s during the winter when dusk falls much earlier than normal.

Whatever the reason, practicing good safety while driving your RV at night is essential. This list of RV night driving tips comes to you courtesy of Harvey RV and Marine.

Clean Your Windshield

Your windshield is your window to the road, allowing you to see what’s ahead of you. Double-check your wiper fluid before every trip to make sure you have enough. You may even want to carry a bottle in your RV just in case. Replace your wiper blades as soon as you notice they aren’t cleaning as effectively.

Also, make sure the inside of your windshield is clean and free of condensation by running your heating or cooling system. You can use a glass cleaner and paper towels to clean the inside of your windshield or you can polish it using newspaper to get any streaks off.

Dim Interior Lighting

Distractions while you’re driving at night can be really detrimental to your focus. Don’t leave any dome or overhead lights on in your driving cabin and dim or turn off any non-essential lights. Make sure that your passengers aren’t using bright screens that can catch your eye, too.

Add More Exterior Lighting

If you plan to drive your RV at night often, then you should ensure that it can easily be seen by other drivers on the road. LED bar lights on the sides of your RV can be helpful if they’re not too bright or distracting to other drivers, and they shouldn’t be used in fog. Installing brighter headlights will show more of the path ahead; make sure that these are aligned properly for best results.
